A great and easy way to do this is by the google keyword research tool. Type in your keyword and you will see how many monthly searches and how competitive this keyword is.

SEO for Firefox
Absolutely love this tool. My favorite feature is the SEO Xray. It will show you how many external and internal links you have to the specific page.
Go to your competitors website and x-ray their website. Best part. Click on the links tab and then you will see where all the external links are coming from. Now you can reach out to those blogs or companies as well!
SE Scout
Ever wonder how you are ranking for your keywords? Do you go into google and search for yourself? Well that wastes time. SE Scout is free for the first 10 keywords. This is great if you are trying to keep track of one or two websites with specific keywords. If you want to track more keywords then you will have to pay a monthly fee.
This is awesome because you get to see your graph and how your rankings have been improving or dropping over time!
